Why do i work on a number at the same time?

Sometimes i start pieces on the floor by putting random marks down - here I am using graphite taped to the end of a long stick. I do this so I am less in control of the marks - and this afternoon the sun and shadow joined in giving me something to respond to. The purpose is to loosen up and let the creative juices take over. The less I am worried or in control the better.
My inspiration often comes from outside when I am on a run or walking Ruby. I think the best abstract art has to have some starting points, or some context - well, to be honest, I find it helps me or I get lost in overwhelm with too many possibilities. These lines on a gatepost just caught my eye. I see them as genuine, fresh and authentic marks / lines in the landscape and they reflect the kind of spontaneity I want to come through my work.
